Group therapy

Group therapy for men and women from Iranian origin

Introduction
As a refugee you have to deal with not just the past and what you went through, but also with the here and now and your life in your new country. You may be struggling with your future perspective.
The pain of political suppression, personal and social problems brought about a situation in which you felt you had to leave precious friends and relatives and find security and a new future in another country. In some cases it appears to be not too difficult to find your way in the host country and solve all the problems you are faced with on your own, but there may be times that the problems are just beyond your means.
You are confronted with questions like:

  • Was it a good decision?
  • How to deal with homesickness?
  • What is my position as a man in the new country?
  • Is this the place where I want to get old or should I find another country?
  • How to deal with loneliness?
You do not just struggle with questions about the past, the present and the future, but also with psychological complaints, like depression, anxiety, nightmares, sleeping problems, relational problems, irritability, stress and tension. In that case it may help to participate in a group of people who are in similar circumstances, exchange experiences en see how others cope with the problems they are confronted with. In this way you will gain your own insight in how things can be done differently and this will allow you to find back your own power and feel better in your life and daily functioning.
    Participation:
You can participate if you suffer from the following complaints (among others):
  • Depression or post traumatic stress disorder; nightmares, irritability, sleeping problems
  • Bodily and psychological stress problems
It is of utmost importance that you feel a real motivation to change and be prepared to put real effort into the therapy.
In order to participate, you need to agree to rules of secrecy and confidentiality, in order that each member can enjoy an ‘atmosphere of trust’.
    Objectives
  • Acknowledgement and recognition by people in the same circumstances
  • Reduction of complaints or learning to cope with the complaints
  • Breaking social isolation and building a social network
  • Empowering: learning to reduce the complaints and to cope with them
  • Learning to cope with stress and tension proceedings and approach:
There are a maximum of ten members in a group, who meet once every two weeks. It is an open group: new members may be introduced at any time.
Group treatment consists of two parts: verbal and non-verbal treatment. The verbal part focuses on themes like nightmares and sleeping problems, the past, the here and now, the future and future perspective, loss and mourning, survival mechanisms, mistrust and trust. The non-verbal part consists of techniques like physical exercises, painting, mindfulness techniques, meditation and relaxation exercises. Participants can bring forward their own themes that they struggle with.
In addition to group therapy, participants may receive individual treatment by one of the group leaders.
