Couples therapy and Relationship therapy is a kind of psychotherapy that aims to solve relational problems between partners.
When to choose relationship therapy? Tensions and misunderstandings are a normal thing between partners and usually they can solve their problems on their own. There are times when problems have grown so deep that they cannot be solved under one’s own steam. The partners then have two choices: end the relationship or call for outside help. If you choose the latter, relationship therapy can be of value. Guided by a relationship therapist whom you feel you can trust, you may find opportunities to give your relationship a new chance. Another possibility is that in the course of the therapy the partners come to the conclusion that they better put an end to the relationship, or to agree to a so-called ‘trial divorce’. In the latter case, I can help you to conduct this process in a manner as respectful and painless as possible. You could also use relationship therapy as a means t bring more love to and a deepening your relationship. Other questions that could be investigated are:
- How can I communicate better with my partner?
- My partner and I are growing apart, what can I do about it?
- My partner is unfaithful, how do we move on?
- We have arguments all the time. How can we change this?
- I feel like breaking up, but is it really what I want?
- I feel lonely in my relationship; how can I get some understanding for this from my partner?
Together with you and your partner I will look closely into all the aspects of the problem. In follow-up sessions we will try to find solutions to your relational problems. After an atmosphere of trust and confidentiality has been established, there is an opportunity to really listen to each other, communicate and gain an understanding for each other and each other’s behaviour. Once you can look at the problem as observers, you and your partner will gain insight into the way in which the problem is created and kept in existence. Subsequently, we can look into possible changes in your behaviour to each other, so that dysfunctional patterns in your relation can be broken. If your partner is not willing to go into relationship therapy, you can opt for individual counselling. We will then look into your own behaviour and your part in the relationship and investigate possible changes.

Since 2013, relationship- and family therapy are no longer reimbursed from the basic package of your health insurance. You may choose to pay the costs yourself.
This way your data, diagnosis and treatment will not be recorded elsewhere.

Cover by “Aanvullende verzekering”:
Since I am a member of het Nederlands Verbond voor Psychologen, psychosociaal therapeuten en Agogen (Dutch Association of Psychologists, psychosocial therapists and Social workers) –(NVPA), and het Register Beroepsbeoefenaren Natuurlijke Gezondheidszorg (Register for Professionals in Natural Health Care) – (RBNG), insurance companies will cover the cost of the therapy partly or in full in most cases. It is part of their cover of “alternatieve geneeswijzen” (alternative health care or alternative therapies). The level of cover varies from company to company. The websites of the associations above indicate which insurance companies cover the therapies provided by their members. In general, the cover they mention are per insured person.
